Metalworking

» Metalworking

Metalworking is a technological process of changing the shape, size and quality of metals and alloys. During the technological processes of metal processing, the shape and size of the metal change by various methods, and the physical and mechanical properties of metals can also change.

Metals are a demanded raw material in modern production and industry. A large number of parts and items used in various areas of our life are made from them.

However, to obtain a product with certain properties, characteristics and shape, it takes a lot of time and effort. There are the following types of metalworking:

  • thermal;
  • chemical;
  • mechanical;
  • artistic;
  • using pressure or cutting.

Heat treatment features

This process is characterized by exposure to high temperatures. Due to which you can give the necessary parameters, properties and structure.

Most often, metalworking is used in the production of parts for various machines and other equipment operating under heavy loads. There are three main heat treatment methods:

  • annealing;
  • hardening;
  • vacation.

Each of these processes has a different effect on the material that is subjected to it. To further increase the variability of the characteristics of the material, it can additionally be subjected to cooling and aging.

Processing

The method makes it possible to obtain details by means of a force effect on the metal, mainly at high temperatures. There are several of the most popular processing methods.

One of them is rolling. The billet is compressed between several rolls. They rotate, advancing the workpiece further and further. The shape of the rolls can have a different configuration, depending on the requirements that apply to the part.

The second is pressing. This process consists of placing the material in a closed mold. Under tremendous pressure, it assumes the configuration of this form.

The third is drawing. This process involves pulling the workpiece through a hole of smaller diameter. Its size is selected depending on the requirements for the resulting product.

Forging, as well as volumetric and sheet stamping, also belongs to the processing of metals by pressure.

Chemical treatment

This method is considered the easiest to perform. It does not require sophisticated equipment or too much labor. Usually used to give the surface a certain appearance. In addition, with the help of chemicals, it is possible to significantly improve such operational characteristics of the metal as resistance to mechanical damage and corrosion.

The most common chemical treatments are oxidation and passivation. A little less often, galvanizing, nickel plating, copper plating, chromium plating, cadmium plating, etc. can be used. Sometimes they are used to give the material a decorative appearance.

Cutting

The method is considered traditional and common among all. Its main varieties: drilling, stamping, cutting, cutting. With their help, from an ordinary sheet or chock, you can get a part of the required shape and with the required dimensions. Usually they are used in the manufacture of a workpiece, which is planned to be used for further technological operations.

Artwork

The most common are casting, forging and chasing. With their help, you can get a work of art. The finest work is chasing. It allows you to depict a picture on the surface of the metal. At the same time, it can be carried out both on a cold and on a heated surface.
